Bringing the joy of music to children and the elderly in Hamilton, Waikato
I'm Joanna – a Music Specialist currently working towards my degree and registration as a Music Therapist.
I may be a little biased, but I believe music is magic. Especially when shared with children and the elderly. From tapping toes to sparking memories, I love exploring how music brings us together.
“Research shows that music can stimulate new connections in our brains; keeping our cognitive abilities sharp and our memories alive.” — L. Sherman, University of Chicago 2023
Tailored music experiences designed to connect, develop skills, and support well-being
Children can feel excluded from a world where verbal language is king. Music can have an equalising effect as each participant can interpret the musical meaning however they please. This offers a sense of connection without the pressure of language.
From working on mobility and stamina to language and learning, music can help us grow. Music can get us moving, give us the chance to take turns like jazz musicians in musical conversation, assist children to learn their ABCs, or identify their 'head shoulders knees and toes' in a fun-filled way.
Music lifts moods, eases anxiety, and helps us make sense of emotions. Whether through a favourite song or banging loudly on the drum, it's a powerful tool for self-expression and balance.
With a participant-led approach, their interests and needs guide the session. Engaging with songs and activities they enjoy, while staying open to new sparks of inspiration. Together, we build on their strengths in a supportive, flexible, and purposeful way.
Structured for connection and shared experiences. With hello and goodbye songs, movement, instruments, and plenty of sing-alongs, sessions encourage participation, community, and fun.
Music has a magic way of connecting us all. It fills the room with smiles, stories, and laughter, turning ordinary moments into something special. From singing and clapping to simply enjoying the tunes, music helps everyone feel at home together.
Music makes moving feel easier and more fun! A steady rhythm helps guide steps, claps, and stretches, while those upbeat songs give extra energy and motivation. Whether it's dancing, chair exercises, or simply tapping along, music can support strength, balance, and coordination for everyone.

The participant's interests and needs guide the session. Using songs and activities they enjoy to give space for conversation and connection, or relaxation and pain relief. A resident may enjoy a visit to their room, where they feel most comfortable, to simply listen, sing along or talk about memories that different songs spark.
